I’m an English born artist now living in Australia. When I was barely out of my teens, my life changed. I had a glint in my youthful eyes and I was intent on travel.

South Africa and then Australia became the visual stimuli for my venture into the world of art.

I found the colours of the veld inspirational and the contrast with the lushness of the Cape a further inspiration. Oil paint became the ideal medium to reflect my subjective, emotional response to the natural world. The question I faced as an artist was how to convey, in a painting, the untamed natural beauty of Africa. At times it was flat, dry and interminably dusty but occasionally you found texture and form in an arid riverbed or where a bright yellow flower struggled for water in the crevices of a granite boulder.

Now I live in Australia where the colours are different, but no less bold. In the Outback, rich ochre and russet are a dazzling contrast to the cobalt blue sky. The beaches and the tropics are vibrant, diverse stimuli to which it is impossible not to respond.

A love of texture and exuberant colour are the keystones of my work. I turn my paintings continuously while I’m working, many can be hung vertically or horizontally, which leaves my work open to the imagination and an individual interpretation of the viewer – the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through.
